Dishwasher not draining, appliance repair, dishwasher repair, dishwasher is not draining, dishwasher not draining, dishwasher leaking, dishwasher no pompous, dishwasher runs too long, dishwasher hums then shuts off, dishwasher doesn't clean dishes well, dishwasher leaves glassware cloudy, clogged dishwasherRule out these reasons your dishwasher is not draining properly before you call for service. If water gets blocked on its way to the drainpipe, it has nowhere to go but back into the dishwasher. There are many reasons this could be occurring and not all of them require you to call a dishwasher repair service. This article will help you check the most common dishwasher parts that could be causing this problem so that you can identify and fix the problem on your own.

Drain Hose

If your dishwasher won’t drain, it could be that the drain hose is clogged. To check this, remove the drain hose from the dishwasher and the sink drain and clean it out. The most common spot for blockage is at the garbage disposal.

Check the Valve

It could be that the reason your dishwasher won’t drain completely is that the check valve is stuck in the closed position. The check valve is what prevents water from returning to the dishwasher after the water has been drained. If the valve gets stuck closed, it will prevent the water from draining out of the dishwasher. You can usually find the check valve in the outlet of the pump attached to the drain hose.

The Check Ball

Your dishwasher could also not be draining properly because the check ball might be stuck. The check ball is the small plastic ball in the check valve (attached to the drain hose) which prevents water from returning to the dishwasher after it has drained. If the ball is stuck, it will stop the water from draining. Examine this to determine if the ball is simply stuck and thus causing your dishwasher to not drain properly.

Drain Pump And Motor Assembly

If your dishwasher still won’t drain completely or is leaking, the pump and motor assembly could be defective. If the motor isn’t running during the drain cycle or it just makes a humming noise when it should be running, you may need to replace the pump and motor assembly.
