Appliance Repair | Interesting Uses for the Microwave

Appliance Repair | We all know what a useful tool the microwave is. From reheating leftovers to cooking a simple dinner, the microwave is a well-used and well-loved kitchen appliance. But did you know there are even more things you can do with your microwave? We’ve compiled a list of microwave tips and tricks to make your life even easier.

Garlic and onions

There are two microwave tricks to share here. Heat garlic in the microwave for about 20 seconds before peeling, and the skin will easily come off the cloves. No messy peeling involved! For onions, chop off each end and then place in the microwave for 30 seconds. You won’t shed any tears when chopping them and your eyes won’t sting!

Who doesn’t love the idea of eggs in the morning? You can cook eggs in a mere three minutes in the microwave. Just put the egg, a little milk and whatever ingredients (cheese, veggies, etc.) in a coffee mug and cook, stopping half way to stir.

Old honey and brown sugar

If your brown sugar has turned into a solid lump or your honey has crystallized, your microwave is here to help. For brown sugar, place the block of the sugar into a bowl and add a few spoonfuls of water. Cover the bowl with a damp paper towel and microwave for intervals of 30 seconds, stirring in between until the sugar has softened. For honey, cook it (with the lid off) for one to two minutes at half power – be careful not to melt the plastic container it’s in!

Corn on the cob

Place the entire ear of corn (including husks) into the microwave – you can wrap it in cling-wrap for less mess if needed. For one to two ears, microwave for three minutes; for three to four ears, microwave for five minutes. The corn will be cooked and will easily slide out of husk.

Microwave cleaning tricks

Making delicious and easy food in the microwave is awesome. Cleaning the microwave: not so awesome. But don’t worry, we have a microwave oven hack just for cleaning! Slice a lemon in half and squeeze a little juice into a bowl of water. Put both halves into the bowl and place in the microwave for five minutes. The steam from the lemon juice will soften any dried food and grime in the microwave, making it a simple (and chemical free) way to clean your microwave. – hhgregg
